TRANSPORT
“Transport issues are a major concern to all residents in the Alfred Cove Electorate and
as the volume of road traffic continues to grow, there will be an increase in the associated
noise and pollution affecting local families. During debate in Parliament I have
called for an assurance from the State Government that a consistent and equitable
scheme be implemented to improve road safety in this Electorate.”
Janet’s Record
Traffic Lights Installed
– Janet worked with the community and the City of Melville to have traffic
lights installed at the intersection of Canning Highway and Norma Road / Dunkley Avenue after it
was identified that the intersection qualified for ‘Black Spot Funding’ because of the number of accidents
at that location. Main Roads has advised that the traffic lights should be installed before
the end of this year.
Keep clear road markings
– Janet obtained a commitment from Main Roads to install Keep Clear
road markings to alert drivers to the fact that it is an offence to block the intersection of Ardross
Street and Canning Highway in Alfred Cove. As the Minister for Police removed the Crossing Guard
at that dangerous intersection, it is extremely hazardous for the young students to cross the highway
on their own when vehicles are blocking the intersection.
Pelican Crossing at Melville Plaza
– Janet was successful in having the pelican crossing installed on
Canning Highway near the Melville Plaza Shopping Centre to assist pedestrians to safely cross the
highway to get to and from the shops.
Road Safety Advisory Committee
– Janet serves on the City of Melville’s Road Safety Advisory
Committee, which includes senior representatives from the South Metropolitan Police Traffic Patrol,
Main Roads and the Office of Road Safety. The Committee meets regularly to discuss road safety
issues in this Electorate.
The Problems
Canning Bridge Train Station
– There is a lack of public toilets at the Canning Bridge Train Station.
According to the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure the nearest public toilet is more than a
kilometer away in a local park. This is too far away and too difficult to get to, particularly for older
or disadvantaged people to use.
Improving local bus services
– Current bus transport services through the suburbs of Attadale and
Bicton are too infrequent and fail to meet the growing needs of the community. Elderly local residents
are having to wait to catch several interconnecting buses and are experiencing difficulties in
safely crossing Canning Highway to get to and from local shopping centres. There needs to be a
direct bus service for the people of Attadale and Bicton, and another separate direct bus service
for the people of Applecross.
Traffic Pollution
– Recent medical reports have highlighted the terrible harm that traffic noise and
vehicle pollution can have on babies and human mortality. Residents living close to major arterial
roads like Leach Highway, Canning Highway and Marmion Avenue have complained about the unpleasant stench of diesel fumes, the constant noise of truck engines and the buildup of road grime
and diesel soot on their homes.
Janet’s Plan
Public Toilets at Canning Bridge Train Station
– Janet has written to the Minister for Planning and
Infrastructure asking the Minister to install public toilets at the Canning Bridge Train Station. Janet
pointed out that the station has twice the projected amount of usage than expected but the nearest
public toilet is more than a kilometer away in a local park, which is too far for older people or
disadvantaged people to use.
Improving local bus services
– Janet has written to the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure
calling for a more direct bus route for residents travelling to Perth for work from the Attadale / Bicton
area and for a more frequent bus service to assist elderly local residents to visit local shopping
areas.
Call for Pollution Inquiry
– Janet has called for a Government inquiry into health concerns facing
the local community after several recent medical reports highlighted the terrible harm that traffic
noise and vehicle pollution can have on babies and human mortality. She has also sought an assurance
from the Government that a consistent and equitable scheme be implemented to improve
road safety in this area.
