COMMUNITY SAFETY
“It is essential that we have up-to-date facilities and sufficient resources for our police
officers to enable them to respond to community concerns in a prompt and efficient
manner. Palmyra Police Station has now been given responsibility for all the suburbs in
the Electorate and more police have been assigned to improve police response times in
line with the community’s expectations.”
Janet’s Record
Closure of local brothels
– Janet worked closely with members of the local community to
successfully have brothels operating in the City of Melville closed. She believes the Prostitution
Amendment Bill is possibly the worst piece of legislation that the Labor Government has forced on
the community in terms of the suffering, harm and abuse it will bring to girls and women and the
ongoing issues that their families will face.
Applecross Retirement Village
– Janet worked with police from Palmyra and Fremantle to set up
successful strategies to deal with unruly youths who were terrorizing the elderly residents at the
retirement village with their anti-social behaviour. Additional police vehicle patrols were organized
and helped to stop the youths from using the retirement village as a thoroughfare.
Heathcote commitment from Police
– Janet worked with police to address community concerns
about an increase in vandalism and anti-social behaviour at the Heathcote Heritage Precinct. Police
gave Janet a commitment to invoke a zero tolerance on anti-social behaviour and drinking in public
parks to successfully stop that trend from continuing.
Challenges
Resources for police
– Janet will continue to monitor the staffing and resources provided to local
police to ensure that adequate levels are maintained and that more police patrols are available
within the community.
Need for a new centrally located police station
– Janet is lobbying for a new state-of-the-art police
station to be located close to Garden City Shopping Centre to overcome the cramped work
conditions at older stations. This would improve police morale, response times and the services
provided to the community.
Rescind Truth in Sentencing legislation
– Janet supports the push to amend the Truth in
Sentencing legislation to better reflect the community’s stand against the automatic one third
discount when sentencing people for criminal offences. She would also like to see the current
lenient penalties for assaulting public officers strengthened.
Janet’s Plan
More Police on the street
– Ensure staffing levels at Palmyra Police Station are fully maintained
until a new state-of the-art, centrally located police station can be built so that more police are available to patrol our streets.
Prostitution
– Encourage City of Melville to reject any applications it receives for sexual service
businesses and to refer the applications to the State Administration Tribunal. The community has
sent a clear message that it does not want brothels or sexual service businesses operating in
residential areas. Ensure that council adheres to its amendment to its Town Planning Scheme that
makes the operation of a sexual service business a defined land use, which is not permitted within
the City.
